Combat & Tourney

Medieval combat at the Fayre will be represented by Lancaster’s Armourie.

They will be in attendance all day at their pavilion, where they will have finished articles for viewing and for sale, and may have armourers at work on new pieces.

Visitors to their pavilion will have the opportunity to try on armour and handle the weapons, such as Bardische and Glaive, at first hand. The true weight of a mail shirt never ceases to amaze the public; getting it on is easy, getting out of it is a much harder job.

During the day the Combatants will parade to the arena where a tourney ring will have been marked out. Here we can stage hand-to-hand armed combat (with a referee to ensure that things don't get out of hand) and demonstrate the use of various weapons and armour.

Spectators will have the opportunity to choose who fights whom, and perhaps decide who is the victor. There are no scripted fights here; each man is for himself. Fights may be brief, with an obvious victor emerging, or may drag on until one combatant is unable to continue.

The armour being worn, the weapons being used, and the style of fighting will all be described while the combatants are on the field,
but during the day please take the opportunity to view and talk to the guys at the pavilion. They are very approachable, and they will not bite.
